Did you install DX9a?

I just formatted and reinstalled XP on Monday, started getting everything set up and then made the mistake of installing DX9a.... from there everything went to hell in a handbasket, express delivery. After the first reboot everything seemed fine and I left to go do something. When I got back home I went in to finish installing every and the screen was completely black instead of the screensaver I had designated to kick in after 45 minutes, but with a move of the mouse the power on my monitor went off then came back on and I was on my desktop. Thinking it was a power setting I went to the control panel which had a serious delay in opening and selected the power options. Again there was a delay in opening but eventually it opened fine and there were no power options selected, so I decided to check the screensaver settings. I click on display propeties and it opens, again with a delay, and appears to be fine until I click on the screensaver tab and *POOF* rebbot. I tried again and had the same effect. Since I disable Restore Points and DX9 cannot be removed, I decided to just reformat. After installing XP for the 2nd time I installed DX9 (not 9a) that I had stored on my computer and everything is now fine, even after all the Critical updates and my basic apps are installed.

Well anyway, that was a long story....

the point of which was DX9a, despite that M$ site says it fixes some flaws from the initial DX9 release is either very screwed or I just got a bad install. I'm inclined to think it had to do with DX9a since I had no problems prior to installing that and based on what you stated, it sounds very similar.

So, I guess the question of the day is:

Is Direct X 9a just outright crap or were we just unlucky?

Hi Toast - are you sure that your PC is reporting mmsys.exe missing? Please post the exact error messages that you are getting.

It probably wouldnt hurt to have a look at your startups. Go here and download and run Startup List. It will generate a log file. Copy the log and paste it back into this thread.

Thank you Baser-X One more question..

I just checked and it is directX9a. You say that there isn't any way to uninstall 9a... (Somehow my restore got turned off, so I couldnt restore it to fix that) Is there a way to install the good old 9 over 9a.? .

Ok.. (shoulda wrote you this in order, sorry.) First of all.. I found the directx9a installer and reinstalled it... That solved my not being able to access my sounds and multimedia props... but now I cant even access my system restore.. click on sys restore... brings up a blank screen..nothing else.

And to make every thing much better... I dont have a system intall disc... so.. cant wipe hard drive and start over. . I dont know.. if you have any Ideas... I would appreciate the help... Thanks again...

Ummm....I cant see it in the log Toast.

OK, you have My Search Bar installed. It is a known Search Page Hijacker and is probably responsible for the problems you have been having with IE. Uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and reboot afterwards.

Regarding your problem with System Restore, have a look at this article by Microsoft Control Panel, Help, and System Restore Are Empty or Partially Empty. Check your registry entries. If you need to make changes and you are not quite sure what to do, post back and we will be happy to walk you through any edits. Let us know how you get on.
