posted: wednesday 28 november 2007 / windows vista displays invalid system disk error / hardware: dell laptop / this error message was generated when the laptop was rebooted after a sort internet browsing session. initial indications pointed to a boot sector virus. virus scan also indicated a possible trojan / "heur.trojan.generic" / however the system restarted without error at the conclusion of several windows software updates. however, on the second boot which was necessary to configure installed updates the system produced the error listed in this post. using a backup computer to access the internet I found a similar note on this forum. / subsequently removed [unplugged] the ocz rally 4 gig "ready boost" drive / did a cold start reboot of windows vista / the system is operational again. under ordinary circumstances one might give up and replace the hard disk because boot sector viruses can render a machine unusable. however, the process described above provided a remedy in this specific case. <end post>
