I can't play WMV in IE

Hi, I hope this is the correct board to be posting this.

For awhile now I haven't been able to play WMV videos in IE. I can't remember when the problem occured or what the cause of it could be. When I go to a webpage that has a WMV to video to play, I can't play it. I click the 'play' button, it says it's buffering, and then it says 'ready'. But there is no video or audio at all. The only way I can view it is by copying/pasting the video's URL into Windows Media Player.

I did download a couple codec packages, hoping I could fix the problem that way. While it did fix some WMP problems I was having. It did not fix this issue.

Not sure if a internet plugin is messing it up or simply not having the right codec installed.

I have Internet Explorer Ver. 7 and my WMP is Ver. 11. Help is very much appreciated

Um it's a cable modem that's hooked up in the kitchen. I use a wireless connection for this computer in my room. I get roughly 500kb/s on downloads. If that's what you mean..
