View Full Version : Right-click menu keeps popping up!

I just got an Acer laptop (early present!) and I'm having an issue with it. I'm not sure if this is the proper subforum for this but since I'm running on Vista I thought I'd give it a shot ;)
The problem is that everytime I try to type in a text field (any text field except... yahoo messenger now that I think about it) the drop down menu you get when you right-click will pop up. I'm not hitting any extra keys or the touch pad. It pops up every 1-4 keystrokes and is INSANELY annoying. I'm using Firefox as my browser, but it's doing this in WordPad also.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this?

Hi CryPixie83. The problem might be caused by a poorly written context menu handler. Download and run the ShellExView utility according to the instructions in Method 2 here (http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/slowrightclick.htm). To group all Context Menu handlers together, just click on Type underneath the Menu items. Try disabling the non-Microsoft items listed under Type -> Context Menu only (one at a time and then try rightclicking to see if you can identify if one is causing the problem). If there is anything you are not sure of ask first. Let us know if this helps.
NB, make sure that you rightclick on ShellExView and choose "Run as Administrator"

I tried what you said with ShellExView but I'm still having the same issue. I only have two non-Microsoft context menu handlers.
Any other ideas what the problem may be?
btw, I really appreciate the advice :)

Try disabling all add-ons in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons) and see if it still happens.

Have you always had this problem with this laptop? If not, did the problem co-incide with the installation of new software or hardware?

The laptop is new, I've only had it for about four days.

I have done some more research since I last posted CryPixie83 and I have found three other instances of the same problem. In all instances the machines were laptops however only one had Vista installed, the others had XP. They were not all the same brand either.
It appears that the problem is not software related, it's probably caused by a keyboard defect so I suggest that you return this laptop and have it checked out.

CryPixie - I had/have the same issue - infrequently though. I'd have constant pop ups for about a week or so, then I'd be okay for a month. I have a HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium. I share your frustration with the pop ups!!!! Let me know what luck you have with returning your laptop?? Mine is 10 months old and I purchased some type of 2 year warranty. I'll have to look up what that covers. I may just take mine to the local computer fix it guy and see what he says. I'm glad someone else has had the same problem (not really, but you know what I mean), I thought I was the only one with the nutzo computer : )

I did get the problem solved :thrilled:
I *finally* received a reply from Acer and was told to reinstall the touchpad driver, which totally fixed the problem. Good luck with your laptop, that was the most frustrating problem I have ever seen (especially since I like to hang out on BBSs)
My thanks to all those who helped me out!

Yes. Look on the HP site for Touchpad drivers for the make and model laptop you have. You may find that an update has been issued.

I am/was in the process of downloading the touchpad and OFCOURSE, the HP touchpad does not download; I receive an error message saying 'download error - session timed out". So now, I'm waiting for lovely tech support to email back (because online tech support would not open on my browser, go figure) :curse:

Tech support emailed me back and I followed their instructions. They gave me a direct link to download the touchpad and I was able to successfully do that - woohoo :D They also had me download a BIOS update? Not entirely sure the premise behind that, but I did that successfully as well. So far, no pop ups (knock on wood, crossing fingers) but they were random in their popping. Hopefully all goes well!!!! Thanks for your assistance AnnMarie! On to post my next problem...:hmm:

Unfortunately, I'm back.....and so are the pop ups (right click windows). I had one randomly come up yesterday when I was on a webpage; I thought maybe it was just me hitting something on accident. I signed onto AIM tonight, and pop ups were in full force; signed off the program and they are continuing on this webpage as we speak. Should I follow the instructions (again) HP tech support gave me? Or am I beating a dead horse?

Have you installed any new software or hardware imagine1012? If not, try running System Restore first this time and restore back a few days when all was ok. If that doesnt work, yes, try the steps that worked for you last time.
