View Full Version : CPU utilaization

I have a spike every 30 seconds or so that sucks up about 50% or more of the CPU. While it spikes it makes the system very difficult to use, especially when doing something that loads the processor.

I think I've isolated the spike to one or two svchost calls:

DCOMLUANCH (seems to be the big one)

WmiPRVse (seems to be more normal)

I've run several spyware utilities and Norton Anti Virus that pick nothing up. I've seen others with issues get logs analyzed.

Anyone have any suggestions, or advice as to what logs to post?

Hi LAOCA. Lets see what is running on your PC. Go here (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?) and download Hijack This to your Desktop. When you have downloaded it, doubleclick to install. Once installed, open Hijack This and click on scan. Most of the files listed will be harmless and/or required so do not make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.

Also go here (http://www.silentrunners.org/) and download Silent Runners.vbs (clicking the the download link works if you use IE. If you use FireFox, rightclick on the link and choose "Save Link As") to a new folder on your drive and run it. It generates a log too. It takes a minute or two and it will notify you with a popup when your log is ready (it will be in the new folder you created). Please post the information back in this thread. If your antivirus program queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious.

If it looks like a malware issue, I'll transfer your topic to the Cyber Safety Forum.

Hi AnnMarie,

First, thanks for your help.

I'm posting the Hijack log below. As a FYI: I did get an error 5 when I first opened it.

As another FYI: When I forst posted, I stated CPU utilization of over 50%. That was as reported by Everest. However It seems to actually be more like 80% (confirmed with Process Explorer.)

While I have not been able to capture the high CPU usage directly into the service, it appears to be lighting up svchost PID 568. I am unclear if 568 is the PID of DCOMLAUNCH or not.

That's not a full Silent Runners log however our tools cannot enumerate 64bit OS's correctly LAOCA so it doesnt matter. I can see enough to tell you it is unlikely your issue is malware related.

So many services including WmiPRVse depend on DCOMLAUNCH and any one of these could be causing the spikes. Ultimately, the issue may be that you have software installed that is not compatible with the 64bit architecture.

Try clean boot troubleshooting to see if you can isolate the problem. See here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/) for more information.

Thanks AnnMarie. The 64 bit world ya know. Love it, and hate it.

I think I have it tracked back to the Intel Storage Manager at this point.
