Hello, Natalie, and welcome to the CTH Forum -
![]() You'll need to provide some more information about your system before specific suggestions can me made, e.g. computer brand/model, OS, browser being used (e.g. IE, Firefox, etc.), connection type (cable, DSL, dialup), and router present or not? Also, is this a new problem, i.e. did the computer & the browser work fine before; if so, any changes in hardware, software, etc. that might have started this problem; of course, you can also try another browser to see if this issue is common to both? As a starter though, you might want to go into Device Manager (right click on Computer & select Manage) - check your network devices, any yellow ! or red X; in addition, go to the start menu, RUN -> CMD to open a terminal window - first, 'ping 127.0.0.1' (w/o the quotes) - if this returns 4 responses, then your 'internal' TCP/IP setup should be fine; second, type in 'ipconfig /all' (again, no quotes) - if you can do a 'screen capture' & paste the results in your response, then that will be helpful. Good luck! |

Hi again, Natalie - very well done, I must say!
With the pinging of 127.0.0.1 (also called localhost) returning those responses, the 'internal' TCP/IP setup in your computer should be functioning correctly; this would indicate that your problem most likely relates to an interaction between your modem/software/AOL - now 'how' to figure this out? Unfortunately, I've not used modems/dialup connections for a long while, and AOL can be a 'tough' deal, esp. when it used its own 'proprietary' software; you might want to provide some further information, i.e. the OS you are using (assume XP?) and the browser? Does AOL allow you to now use 'other' browsers, such as IE, Firefox, or Opera? I would hope others might 'chime in' here since I'm not on this type of connection any longer - sorry. Another interesting finding in your 'ipconfig /all' listing is that DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is stated to be not enabled - typically, on 'dialup' connections (and on my cable modem) you are assigned a 'dynamic' IP address - you might want to check your internet connection properties to see if the setting is for use w/ DHCP rather than a 'static' IP address? Finally, try to contact AOL for some help since they are your ISP (can be a pain & often not helpful, unfortunately) - also, I hope some of our 'experts' will read your thread and provided some help; good luck again - plenty of other suggestions -
