my vista comp may be compromised

all of a suuden my compuet has been acting odd. i'm getting messages from websites that my account has been phished. proformance issues are coming up and windows vista says i have no spyware or antivirus even though they are on and running. i have tried a scan with them and nothing is showing up. can someone tell me where to go for help?

Hi dmanshead. Lets see what is running on your PC. Go here (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?) and download Hijack This to your Desktop. When you have downloaded it, doubleclick to install. Once installed, open Hijack This and click on scan. Most of the files listed will be harmless and/or required so do not make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.

Also go here (http://www.silentrunners.org/) and download Silent Runners.vbs (clicking the the download link works if you use IE. If you use FireFox, rightclick on the link and choose "Save Link As") to a new folder on your drive and run it. It generates a log too. It takes a minute or two and it will notify you with a popup when your log is ready (it will be in the new folder you created). Please post the information back in this thread. If your antivirus program queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious.

Have you downloaded AVG AntiSpyware and tried to install it?

Also the version of WinAMP that you have installed is an older version and there is a typo in a registry setting. You might like to uninstall it and install the latest version if you wish to keep this program.

yes i just downloaded it last night and will run it, but wanted to wait until i had a reply to do so. well it makes me feel better to know that i have no issues here, so it looks as if part of my problem is outside of my system, and that is a relief.

Well something is not quite right. I dont know why the installation file is in your running processes and you dont appear to have installed it yet. If I were you, I would kill the running process (see below), delete the installation file (in bold) and obtain a fresh download (to the Desktop) and install it. Reboot afterwards.

Your Java Virtual Machine needs updating although I am not sure why in your case. Vista installs JRE 6. Anyway, some malware exploit early versions of this software. Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall all versions Java/JRE (Sun Java Runtime Environment/J2SE Runtime Environment) and reboot. When you have done that, go here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and download and install the latest version of Sun Java (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3).

i tried to instal my scanner to this computer but the software and vista are not compatible, i try to uninstall parerport and i get a message saying that i need to close an application and to hit retry to continue. the process is: PaperPort print to desktop for NT (process Id: 2764, and i cannot figure out how to do this. not a major problem except that it asks me to register the software when i reboot my computer. Really a minor annoyance, but the software is unnecessary as i can't use my scanner with this computer.

A couple of options.

1. Open Task Manager (rightclick on your TaskBar and choose Task manager) and click on the Processes Tab. Look for the below process and click on end process.

2. Click on Start and type msconfig in the Start Search box. It will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Click on the Startup Tab, look for the below startup items and uncheck them and reboot.
