I have the above problem (stop, re-start)...Thought I found a solution somewhere on this form here last nite...but only implemented last part of the solution. Seemed to work fine for a short bit - but returned. I cannot find the original post...any help or ideas would be welcomed. Vista 32 bit Ultimate.

Hi Michaelc. What are you doing when Explorer shuts down and what error message do you get?

Michaelc
December 5th, 2007, 04:45 AM
Just exploring folders when it happened...Error is "Windows Explorer has stopped working"....desktop GUI disappears then "Windows Explorer is restarting"...

Try disabling thumbnail previews Micheal. See here (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-thumbnail-previews-in-windows-vista-explorer/) for more help.

Did this fix the problem?

Perhaps it will help if I can see what is running on your computer and what programs you have installed.

Go here (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?) and download Hijack This to your Desktop. When you have downloaded it, doubleclick to install. Once installed, open Hijack This and click on scan. Most of the files listed will be harmless and/or required so do not make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.

Run Hijack This again but this time, Click on Config > Misc Tools > Open Uninstall Manager and click on Save List. Save the log to your Desktop and then post it in this thread.

You posted another Hijack This log Michael. See my instructions below for posting the Uninstall log.

Run Hijack This again but this time, Click on Config > Misc Tools > Open Uninstall Manager and click on Save List. Save the log to your Desktop and then post it in this thread.

I can no longer get to the Control panel...Maybe the SmitFraud viris stuck on a Vista???

I cant see any evidence of malware in your log. Boot into Safe Mode ( restart your computer and tap F8 continuously as it restarts). Can you access Control Panel now and does Explorer shut down?

Sorry about the delay in responding. Some new updates were applied from Microsoft over the last few nights and the problem seems to have disappeared. Exactly which updates may have corrected the problem i am not sure.
Thank You very much for your help!!! I repost if it re-occurs...
