Post Internet dissconnect problem

Hi, I use verizon internet and my internet keeps dissconecting about every 5 minutes and then i have to turn the modem (black box thing?) off then back on. Then i have to go on internet and diagnose problems for it to fix. I also have a wireless (linksys) thing connected to it. When i diagnose problems itr not only fixes my internet on my computer but (linksys) as well. But because of these problems i cant use the (linksys) properly so i cant connect it through my computer like normal. I have to connect both my computer and (linksys) directly to the modem for me to get a connection at all. (Both don't have to be connected at once) It migth be something wrong with the ip because once or twice it said it had a problem getting an ip address or it might be that i need a new modem or maybe another thing. I want to make sure that it is the modem that's making problems. If somone does post directions on correcting this please give directions that i can understand because i obviously don't know all the names of everything.(i've tried turning things off and changing wires and stuff but it didn't to anything, tried lots of stuff already) Thank you for reading and for any responses.

You should be able to access your router (linksys thing) by going to a web browser (IE/Firefox/etc) on your computer and entering in the address bar (the bar where you usually see http://www.cybertechhelp.com/...)...

192.168.1.1

You should see a login prompt asking you for user name and password. User name should be admin, and password should be either nothing, or also admin - unless someone else set it up, and you need to find them. (You should probably change the password for security reasons)

If you're successful, you should see a new 'webpage' for Linksys. Look for a setting that says something about disconnecting under certain conditions (When idle, for example), and either check or uncheck the box so it doesn't try to disconnect. (It changes from router to router).

If you can't get to your router through 192.168.1.1 then the problem is probably in your computer or you might have a faulty network cable (the cable that goes from your computer to your router), and you might try replacing it.

If none of this solves your problem, more information will be needed, including your type of computer (I'm assuming it's a 'PC') and operation system (Assuming it's Windows, but is it 95, 98SE, XP64? Other?). You might be manually configured with a set IP address, instead of letting the router configure it for you, and having a conflict.

seems like internets getting worse. Now I can't connect to anything unless it's directly to my internet with the home computer. If i try to use linksys or the router then it won't work. Ty for the last post

Troubleshooting wireless is tricky.

First, check your router (192.168.1.1), under the Wireless tab, you should choose some kind of encryption (WEP/WPA are common). You choose a password, or have a key generated. If you don't choose encryption, you'll have an open network and be prone to leechers.

Next, check your laptop. Start > Settings > Network Connections > Wireless Network Connection. Check if it says, under Status: Connected (It's okay if it says Firewalled, too). If you don't have Wireless Network Connection, you'll want to walk through the Network Setup Wizard. Choose the type of encryption (WPA/WEP or whatever you chose in the router), and enter the password or key.

If you can get that far, you should be connected. If you run into problems, you'll have to list them. Say exactly what point things stopped working.
