Retrieving Files

We have a Dell computer that is less than one year old. The hard drive crased and I have a ton of pictures on. Dell replaced the drive but I would like to know how to see if I can retrieve the pictures from the old drive. When I try to slave it to the new drive it won't do anything until I format the old drive. Any suggestions?

Try installing the operating system on the new HD. Then try using the old drive as the slave.
