When I load Half Life 2 midway through the loading screen it crashes
The Error as follows
Engine Error
Platform Error: module failed to initialize

Then I click OK on that box and up comes

hl2.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x241f94f7" referenced memory at "0x0e54f41c". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program

In steam I deleted local content, and restored it from a local backup I made before
I updated to latest Graphics card Drivers

Apparently this isn't a rare problem, after googling, this error pops up everywhere, but i have yet to find a solution...

any help would be appreciated

I had the same problem with Half-Life 2, but before going on a fools errand trying to find a problem with the game I'd suggest first checking your PC, try using Memtest to see if any of your memory modules are buggy, then run Prime95 to see if everything else is running fine, make sure you have a propper power supply.

My problems with Half-Life 2 ended when I found out that both my memory and motherboard were bad.

I reinstalled HL2 and all is good
