Internet Explorer 6 closing after MS update

Hi folks,

Since a recent MS upate which put MS Software Distribution Service 3 on my PC, IE6 keeps crashing soon after start-up. I have done a system restore to get rid of it but forgot to turn off Automatic Updates so when I closed down I saw it was installing again. I have just got rid of it again and set system restore to tell me of updates but not download or install them.

Google search reveals others are having this problem but I don't see a fix for my particular version which has different application numbers and mod version numbers to the ones I have seen. I also saw that sometimes System Restore is disabled by this update as MS do to want us to disallow this software.

Anyone else had this problem?

Hi, welcome to CTH

That's a known issue with the update, and Microsoft has a workaround on the MSKB here (<----link). It involves a registry edit, I did it on 3 PC's at home and it works great.

It's not all that scary.
To be safe, make a copy of your registry in case you bork something - open the registry editor (Start | Run | type in regedit and press enter) and at the top left click on File, then Export.... In the Save in.. box choose desktop and give it a name like "good registry" or something like that. You'll end up with an icon on your desktop that, if you need to, you can simply double-click to merge it back and make things right again. Once that's done, follow the directions in that Knowlege Base article I linked to above. Chances are you'll be a happy person afterward.

Well, there ya go - Microsoft has changed it up to a simple download. Should be a snap to fix now, eh?

They have? Does it have the same number as the one that caused the trouble, No. 942615 or a new number?

I was going to download FireFox to give me alternative access to the internet in case I messed up the registry change ( unless the change would stop FireFox too).

Hey you have been a great help. Thanks

Found the download now. It looks as if the fix, No 946627, needs to be downloaded separately. I guess I need to do that before downloading No 942615 or it will crash again, yes?

Thanks for your patience.

Tafia, go straight to the Knowledge Base page I linked to above - there used to be instructions on editing the Windows registry to fix the problem caused by the update, but the page has been re-worked so now all you see is a download link - it'll fix your browser for you, without you having to muck-about the registry. Ain't life cool?

You have been a great help. I have followed your links and the problem now seems to have been resolved. I took the fix first then took the updates. Working OK so far.

Thanks again.
