reduce screen size

Hi,
I have backed up dvds at home. the problem is that they take up too much space. I am looking

for a freeware program that would decrease the size of the file. if it were possible to have

the file take up half the screen instead of the full screen - surely this would have the

file size?

Any suggestions?

What you are looking to do is rip and convert DVDs into video files. You can then set the vid dimensions, sound bitrate etc.

If you're reducing the size and/or quality of you DVDs, then you're not really backing them up. You're re-encoding them, which is not provided for under fair use law.

But fair use is really a moot point anyway, since backing up a DVD (even if making a full 1:1 copy) pretty much requires you to crack the copy protection mechanism on the disc, which is a breach of the European Copyright Directive.
