In the words of my friend, this is the problem:
Here's the info on my computer: I run Windows ME and I am using Aol 8.0. As of right now we have it figured that my Internet Explorer is corrupted. I am at a loss as to what to do about it. The Internet Explorer is what I need to browse the web. I have found the corrupted files but I don't know how to take them off my computer. Do you know how?? I have a restoration cd that came with my computer but IF I use it I will lose everything!! Can you help me find someone that can tell me "how" to take the files off and reload them without using the restoration cd?? |

Hi Janb - can you please give us some more background information.
What is the actual problem? What version of Internet Explorer is installed on your friends PC? What makes her think I.E. is corrupted? How did she identify which files were corrupted?

In her absence. I'll just say that she can't get on the internet at all and thinks it stems from this piece of advice:
"Do you defragment your system regularly? If you do, another cause could be that your operating system is not unregistering some DLL's, or that the AOL Desktop (AOL's main program when connected to the internet) DLL is conflicting with your normal windows desktop DLL. Millenium is good about eating up resources (memory), and not giving any back to other programs. There are some programs (freeware) out there that free up all the available memory that windows is holding back. For example, say AOL requires 1MB of RAM to open, once open, the next screen you go to in AOL requires 5MB of RAM. This memory consumption keeps going on the longer you use any programs. When your done with the program, you close it, but windows only releases maybe 30% of the RAM that was used for that program. If you would like a copy of a program that optimizes your system and forces it to release all unused RAM, please email me." She did get that program, (sorry don't know what it is) then her troubles started. Will get back to you late tomorrow (after work)! So glad to have you helping again, AnnMarie, you fixed my Klez problem back in February. |

Hi Jan - yep, I remember. I hope that your PC is still running well.
![]() If your friends problems started after installing this program, it would be a good idea if she uninstalled it (if she has not already done so). If she has already uninstalled the program and it didnt help, I think that the next step should be for her to try a System Restore. If she hasnt done this before, tell her to go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and then click on System Restore. Choose "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and pick a date before the problem started and follow the prompts. If the System Restore doesnt fix the problem, the extra information might help. Also what other steps she has tried to fix the problem so far.
