Start up your computer with a bootdisk. Choose the option "without CD-Rom support. At the dos prompt type
scandisk/all/autofix/nosave/surface
This is about the fastest way I've found to run scandisk. It also gives you a good graphic representation of all the sectors on your disk. If you don't have a boot disk {startup disk} you can make one by going to Start--Settings--Control Panel--Add/Remove Programs. Click the tab at the top that says Startup Disk.
Hope this helps, post back. :)

It is obviously a personal choice, but I am a strong advocate of not allowing scandisk to do any autofixing, without reviewing the errors first.
This site (http://users.iafrica.com/c/cq/cquirke/scandisk.htm) does an excellent job of explaining the dangers.
If scandisk could "really" fix (meaning correct) all errors, there would be no need to have it as an option.
