View Full Version : Top half of Welcome Screen and Start Menu Avatar is faded!

The avatar (picture) on my Welcome Screen and Start Menu has a downward-curved pale line running through the middle of the picture (in line with the change in colors of its frame at the sides), with that part of the picture above the curved line being much lighter in color than that below the line.

Is this yet another Vista "glitch". It never was this way with XP!

Any suggestions or comments?

Thanks!

I have never heard anyone mention this before. Have you tried changing your picture?

Yes, I've tried changing pictures, and it happens on every one!

The image files offered are all .bmp's. Have you tried using "Browse for more pictures" and replacing the picture with a jpg from your own collection? If not, give it a try and let us know if this made any difference.

Yes, I've tried it with .jpgs from my own collection. No difference. The top half of the avatar is still faded above the curve extending from the frame color shift points.

In a way, I wish that I hadn't asked this question! I hate having problems that likely have no solution. . . .

I merely assumed that it was some sort of "effect" that Vista was trying for (which I didn't like)--now I'm worried that I have some sort of "wacko" Vista problem!

Yes, the picture (regardless of which I use) on the Start Menu on mine also has the line. It's an attempt to give the picture a convex and shiny appearance. The same sort of line runs the length of the Taskbar, again for the convex/shine effect. It's probably only present when using Aero.

It's an effect commonly used in Window Blinds skins, which I used until I got Vista, so I didn't really notice it because I'm so used to it.

Hmmm, mine doesnt have a line. Now that I look closely at it, the top half of the picture is lighter than the bottom half but it just seems to fade. Maybe I need new specs. :D

Thank heavens my avatar "problem" seems to be normal--I thought that it was just my own Vista (which sure seemed unlikely)! I definitely don't like this avatar "effect", however, so I just gave myself a new avatar that was already somewhat light to begin with--making the variation in color not so noticeable.

Thanks for all of your help!

I'm going out to the living room, now, to take the hangman's noose down from the ceiling rafter.
