Home Network Trouble
I want to set up a small windows home network. The two computers on the network will be wireless. On the Vista laptop, I changed the workgroup name to MSHOME and on the XP desktop, I make the workgroup name MSHOME and it ask me to install some drivers. I disable file and print sharing. I can't even find my XP disk right now so what do I do? When I look at the computers on the workgroup it says I don't have permission. The Vista laptop won't display the XP desktop in it's network listings. What do I do?

you should enable the fire and print sharing...just to get the head start of that in order to make sure the connection and being able to see each computers .....after that is accomplish then you can try disabling the file and sharing printer and see if that the main cause of the problem.
the following from the top of my head is what needs to be done XP Workgroup (all must be in the same workgroup) Enable File and sharing printer option ping each computer against each other....(must pass this way we know it can see on the network by IP) have one folder shared on one machine so this can be a quick test to be able to access VISTA make sure network discovery is on printer and file sharing enable workgroup name the same ping ip to xp machine and have xp machine ping to vista machine (again to see if each comptuer can see each other on the network) ALSO list what xp/vista machine see in the network listing once you done the above statments. Be sure to reboot the system once all been setup....sometime this is the solution!!! post back with any problems or result you may have regarding to the above statments... you may have already done them all , but double checking for us wouldn't hurt cheers |

I tried something else to eliminate Vista from our list of possible problems. I have a wired machine running XP home with the workgroup name MSHOME (didn't asked for file and print sharing for some reason) and I look at the workgroup list. XP home is on there but pro is not. The wireless one I figured out, didn't work with the linksys drivers running the card so i gave windows back control. When I look at the workgroup on XP pro, it says
"MSHOME is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. the list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available" I(XP pro) AM the creator of this network and this computer is always running on administrator. EDIT: I can't ping the computers <100% loss> and here is what my netbios report says XP PRO <00>UNIQUE XP PRO <20>UNIQUE MSHOME <00>GROUP MSHOME <1E>GROUP MSHOME <1D>UNIQUE ..__MS.BROWS__. <01>GROUP Last edited by jan00b; January 21st, 2008 at 06:18 PM. |

do a ipconfig /all on both machines...make sure that they are getting ip address from the router....you might have to be hardwired to the router as it seems like its possible that your wireless isn't setup properly. hence i am only saying this because we rather figure out the communicaiton between two computers since you said you can't ping the comptuers as of 100% loss...
we must resolve this before going on so hardwire to the router and see if you are able to get the ip address from the router and ping each computers.... post back that result |
