I am having the same problems discussed at this thread: http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59658

The problem is when I run ipconfig from the command prompt it returns:
An interal error occorred: The system cannot find the file specified.
Additional information: Unable to Query Host.

I am running XP Sp2. This is a clients machine, so I don't know if something happened recently. Although I did have a slight problem with the disk.

I've tried pretty much everything in the suggestions.
I've tried To untick TCP, and reinstall it.
I tried netsh winsock reset
I tried Microsoft's suggestion of resetting the tcp/ip stack: netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
I checked and I do indeed have a tcpip.sys in system32\drivers.
I tried to reinstall tcp by pointint to nettcpip.inf.
I tried to uninstall the net card.

Still nothing works.

Welcome to CTH chris

you've had a good bash at this, fair play, but have you had a look at the device manager?

Also, when you open the windows shell, what prompt are you at?

Hi folks,

The 'Unable to query hostname' error may be because of registry problem. Is regedit something that you are familiar with?

See this KB from MS (http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B918557&x=13&y=14), it tells you how to make sure your computer name is set correctly and fix it if it isn't.

Well shiver me timbers. The suggestion to add the hostname and NV Hostname solved the problem. I am curious how this enteries got deleted.

I was so hung up on the "missing file" message from ipconfig, that I never bothered to do a search on "unable to query host name"

Snurfen are there multiple command prompts in windows?

Thanks for the help z1p

Sort of, the avenue I was following was that perhaps your shell was opening in somewhere weird.

For example, I've just opened a windows shell on the three machines at my desk and they were in:
C:\Documents and Settings\Lazy bloke
C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools
same again on 3rd

Occassionaly you get the bizarrest settings come up and in my experience thats when the netsh set of commands usually play ball.

Nice post there z1p, thanks sensei!

You're welcome Chris and I'm to hear you're up and running.

I have no idea how it could have ended up missing, but if MS has a KB article on it, it most likely happens a fair amount.
