Question SanDisk Cruzer Micro Skins CruzerLock

I want to encrypt my data on my flash drive in case I lose it, but I'm not sure exactly how it works. I went through the steps and encrypted the data using CruzerLock which was provided on the flash drive. But when I re-inserted the flash drive into my laptop, I was able to get into and read the documents I had previously encrypted. Is there something I'm not doing properly? Is there a free downloadable application or something that I can get to safely protect my documents? I want to be able to encrypt them or protect them some how and then when I go to a different computer be able to open them and view them normally. How do I go about doing that?
