Have used wireless on my laptop for about 12 months untill recently when I couldn't connect to the internet. I am connected to the wireless router but unable to connect to the internet. I am running XP on a Acer Aspire I have tried to use "run ipconfig" but it comes up with an error message saying an internal error occurred: The request is not supported. Can anyone suggest a fix please

What do you mean you are connected to the router?
Can you ping the router? Can you open the router's admin GUI from your browser?
Have you taken a look at this thread (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59658) ?

I have tried cmd /k ping and get
[-t] [-a] [-n count] [-1 size] [-f] [-i TTL] [-v TOS]
[-r count] [-s count] [[-j host-list] : [-k host-list]]
[-w timeout] target_name

try cmd /k ping ip_address_of_router
* use the actual ip addres of the router in the ping command.
