I have a Presario 7470. I just tried to quick restore my computer, and it gets to 82%,then it stops. I ran fdisk, and deleted partition and deleted logical DOS drives in the extended DOS partion, the it said drive deleted and then no logical drives defined. i deleted extended DOS partition and primary DOS partition. But quick restore will still not complete, it stops at 82%. Is there something im doing wrong, or is there something else i need to do? Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.thank you

Try cleaning it with something soft.
If you have a really bad scratch try (and this does work..believe me)rubbing the surfact with toothpaste and washing it off with regular water.
I suspect that at 82% you are simply in the filecopy part of the procedure and the only reason things are slowing down is because of difficulty in accessing the data.

Being a recovery disk , I`m not sure about the process.
But your Partitons are OK ?
Primary partition is set Active.?
Format ran OK?
What stage is 82% represent?
Is it Plug and Play hardware detection,... File Copying ?
Can you acces BIOS and disable CMOS Antivirus.
It may be more a ' recovery disk' problem than a windows install problem.
Also what is the CPU .

Someone told me that on a compaq you do not need to fdisk.but someone else told me you should fdisk before you try the quick restore. Now im hearing that i will have to load windows 98 again and then run quick restore. im lost and confused. any help would be greatly appreciated.please!!

Me too!
May be you can get more info HERE (http://communities.compaq.com/servlet/ProcessRequest?RHIVEID=121&RPAGEID=8&RFORMNUMBER=1&RHIDETAG=TRUE&UCATEGORY_0=_26&UCATEGORY_S=0)
Use the "Ask" box to dig around, eg:
Presario 7470 Quick Restore ,
quick restore cd stops , etc.
Best of luck.

You should always have a boot disk made from your windows version. You
should also write protect (http://www.compume.com/configure/storage/default.asp?c=2&sec=4) the floppy after making it to prevent any writing to it (virus, accidental deleting).
Then boot into the floppy and run fdisk from it, then boot
into the floppy again (after fdisk is complete) and run format.
Now that you have fdisked and formatted you are ready to install the operating
system (WindowsXX or whatever). You must format before attempting to install
anything on a drive.
