Networking with Vista

I have a laptop with XP Home and a desktop with Vista Home Premium. I want them to recognize each other. They are both in the same workgroup, I can ping each of them, and even access files when typing in each machines' IP address. However, I cannot see the actual computer in a network map, or workgroup view. This is an annoying problem, that I would like fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, but that's not what I need. I already installed that on my XP computer. I was running through a list of troubleshooting and I realized that I can ping by IP address, but I cannot ping by name.

Not by name, huh? Right, what does an IPCONFIG/ALL give you on both machines?

Sounds like theres a DNS breakdown somewhere! Whilst your doing that, I'll see if I can dig up anything on a DNS issue between XP Home and Vista Home Prem.

I've just been given a top-tip, lets see if it will solve your problem.

Apparently, enabling the TCIP over Netbios tag (the very last item in your output) should resolve the issue.

It's a very weird one, and my mystery helper is in agreeance that this is contra to what you would expect - but hey, thats networks for you

Many thanks to Anony Mouse for that tip.

From researching a similar problem of my own,
My Network Places
Network Connections
right click Local Area Connection and click properties
Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Then Properties
Now Advanced
WINS (tab)
Select Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
Ok etc.
