Cisco change the name of an interface

Hi can anyone tell me if it is possible to change the name of an interface?
What I mean is this if my router has lets say "serial0" can I somehow configure it to say "serial0/0"
Regards Nige.

i don't think its possible unless there is a file on the firmware where you can configure it....however that is doubtful as well...

i have tried to do it on a software that simulate it but doesn't seem to work

let see if anyone say its possible

yes mate it is possible, but not a good idea for what you are proposing (if i read you right),
go to global config, then interface into the port you are interested in and then issue the description command

router> ena
router# conf t
router(config)# int s0
router(config-if)#descrip masternige
that would obviously call the port "masternige". you'd still have to interface to s0 everytime.

Is this for a bit of coursework or something nige? cos different models of routers/switches have different naming conventions for their ports.

for example, an 1700 series would give you a serial of s0, whereas a 2600 would give you s1/0 etc etc.

It all depends how the interfaces are attached to the device. The serial on the 1700 for example is straight out of the chasis, whereas the description I've given of the 2600 is port 0 on a wic1t card in expansion slot1 (hence the 1/0).

Have I just confused the matter?

Yes it was for course work I'm studying for my ccna with the Cisco academy. They gave us a diagram to copy using a system they call "netlab" which gives you the opportunity to configure routers on line. On the diagram we had lets say serial0 but when you log in to there system it's 0/0.So to complete the exercise in full I wanted to be able to change the name of the interface on there router to match my diagram they issued me with.I at first thought this might be a bit of a trick question because everyone I have asked tells me it is not possible. You are telling me it is so I will give this a whirl on there system before I screw up mine

ps I'm working on access control lists at the mo.To create a standard one seems a piece of cake then I moved on to "access-control extended" that it seems will take me a bit longer. The course I'm doing was originally a 9 month course which has been crammed in to 6 months, so its moving at one hell of a pace.Nether the less I'm half way as of tomoZ when I sit another test.(all day at school god I hate college)Thanks again Ill post my results back and let you know if Iv had a phone call from Cisco asking me to pay towards damages.
Regards Nige.

Doing exam 2? good luck fella, that was the easiest one for me! Everyone else on my course hated it.

Did you get yourself the Cisco press study companions by odell and (forgotten) - bsolutely invaluable - great compliment to the netacad stuff.

Careful with those netlabs, quite a few mistakes with the commands, the example you give is a classic.

I got 3 books 1&2 companion guide 3&4 companion guide plus the ccna intro by Wendell Odom.
Then what ever I could dig round on the net,I have been using packet tracer as I have only 3 routers & 1 switch (at the mo) I was told to try "dynamips" have you tried that?
Regards Nige.

yep, dynamips a bit better cos it does IRGP and a few others that PT can't hack. However, worth getting your head around PT4.1 cos I'm pretty sure the final exam scenarios are done in that version this year.
Take it you are on v3.1 not v4 exam path?

Oh heck, ACL - learn em for the exam and never use em ever (if you'veg got any sense)
I hate ACL's, all that wildcard being a negative of the subnet mask etc - does your swede in!
