i live in new york city,

a few nice people in the area put up wireless signals without security, for anybody to use,

but of about 3, i can only connect and surf the web on 1, the others i can connect to but no web access, but i am in a residential area, they must be accessing the web,

any ideas why i'm having trouble getting net access, when i am able to connect ??

It depends on how the router is configured, whether they have an internet line behind the router and how the routing works. Also make sure your wireless network is configured to obtain an ip address automatically to get the best chance of getting an internet connection.

also the best way would be talking to them and see if they have setup anything that would restrict you from interent?

like StevePro said, it all depends on how they connect the router and configured it.

Well, I'm not sure why a 'few nice people' who are paying for a broadband connection would 'invite' all of the neighbors to participate in the experience - stealing bandwidth from others is illegal, so I hope that you indeed have their permission? Just thinking, sorry - :hmm:

thanks everyone,

gir, i don't know exactly who is who here in the internet wireless air, but why would they not secure their connections if they don't want anybody else to use them ?

plus, the one i am using for now expressly indicates that it is free to use,

Well, not everyone uses 'wireless' security options despite the warnings; plus, 'free' & public access wi-fi sites might pose a danger - check out this one short article (http://askbobrankin.com/is_public_wifi_access_safe.html); not sure if you know the people providing the 'free' access, but must always be on the alert - :hmm:

Despite the routers not being secured, other issues might be involved, e.g. MAC filtering, broadcast channels being used, 'wireless' protocols (b or g or both), etc. - you might want to provide some more information about your computer, i.e. brand/model & OS being used - also, from the run->cmd line, you could run 'ipconfig /all' (w/o the quotes) while connected to the router you can use vs. the same command on the other routers - might provide useful information.
