trying to network 2 computers on my internet DSL router.

I have a new hp pavilion running Vista's home edition and a 2000 hp pavilion running XP. both have ethernet and are hooked to my internet dsl router. I would like to set up a net work to share printers and files between them but have not had any luck. Can any one help me?
