View Full Version : Vista Doesn't Load (Stops after loading bar)

I'm using Vista Home Premium on a new computer (About 2 weeks old today).

The problem started when I installed Ubuntu on the computer (I figured since the problem is with Vista I should post it here instead of the Linux forums... If I'm wrong, I'll kindly ask in that forum, thanks. =D). I resized the Windows partition using Ubuntu's installer and the install went smoothly. When rebooting my computer I noticed I could no longer get into Vista. By editing the grub menu I was able to restore Vista as an operating system choice. I was also able to boot the Vista partition through a Super Grub CD.

Here's the problem: I start the computer. It does the POST test. I get a Copyright Microsoft Corporation screen with a bar with green lines running to the right. That loading screen. After a few seconds, the screen goes black. The monitor still receives a signal, as it doesn't go to sleep. I imagined it was just taking a while to reconfigure itself (as it does when I add in my spare HDD to transfer files) but I left the computer on this screen for approximately 10 hours that I was away from my house to find it on the same black screen. The manufacturer's Vista Repair CD (Labeled Operating System Disk, it's for reinstalling Windows) yields the same results. When I try to boot from Safe Mode the process stops after Loaded: \windows\system32\drivers\disk.sys.

I'm thinking something on my Vista install is corrupted due to the fact it won't even start in safe mode, but how do I fix it? Is it a conflict with Linux? Do you need more information? Thank you in advance.

I suspect this topic really belongs in the Linux Forum however we will see. Have a look at this (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=165924) topic. jmtjet posted a link to a tutorial re dual booting and a warning about what might happen if the instructions are not followed.

Okay, I found this on the Ubuntu Forums and it seems to be working (so far).

I know this sounds like an odd solution but it has worked for me each time I've done it. I had the same problem. Installed Ubuntu 6.10 on a working Vista system only to find that Vista would not boot.

This solution requires that you have an XP CD, since Vista CD/DVD will not boot the system either. Go figure.

Boot from the XP CD and choose the system repair option (not the recovery console). It will scan your disk and ask you which installation you want to repair. Choose 1 since it will probably be the only option. It will prompt you for the administrator password for the account. Type in anything as it will certainly fail anyway. Enter the password three times. This will force the XP installer to make a write attempt to the NFTS partition. At this point, the system is as good as fixed.

Next, reboot, choose your Vista installation from Grub. Do the safe mode with command prompt option. The system will load a bunch of drivers and stop at crcdisk.sys. Leave it here for a minute. The drive should light up for a couple of minutes then the system will reboot. Choose Vista again and do a normal boot from the Vista boot menu.

All fixed! Of course, ymmv. But this has worked for me several times. Only gotcha is that you do need an XP CD."

Maybe if anyone else runs into this same problem, they've got a solution now. Thanks for the reply!

That's really interesting blackcanoflysol and great that it's working. I'm trying to figure out how this might have happened. Can you have a look at the link that jmtjet posted and let us know if you might have missed some steps please.
