XP oddly wont connect to internet

So i reinstall XP and ive done this MANY MANY times with seemingly no problems. But it refuses to connect to the internet or maybe the "network"?

Whats happening is that i am trying to make my connection work through a router that 2 other computers are connected to and we have cable internet and well i just wont let me create the kind of connection i need when i go through the connection wizard sometimes it ask to me to run like a network or internet disk or something which i shouldnt have to do as i have never had to before.

and other times when i try to do it the way i think it SHOULD be done it finishes as if it did something right but...still it doesnt actually CREATE the connection.

Sorry this is vague im sure but im not great at describing things.

It would help folks here quite a bit if you could provide as much of the info that is suggested here .

The more info you provide the easier it is to figure out where to start.
