My wife got a new Laptop last week and is very unhappy with Vista, I'm very close to wiping out the hard drive and installing XP to get her computer to run better. Is there any way to get Vista to function use less Memory to run so she can down load programs? Or is there some way to make it run more like XP. I don't want to wipe her hard drive and install XP. If something goes wrong we're stuck with a $700 door stop

Might want to provide some more information, e.g. brand/model of the laptop & the amount of RAM - since this is a 'new' machine, I'm assuming the manufacturer installed the appropriate VISTA-compatible hardware/drivers & gave you enough memory to run this new OS (just bought a new Dell LP w/ VISTA, and upped the RAM to 2 GB).
Also, removing VISTA & installing XP may be daunting, and has been discussed in numerous threads - you might want to review some of the previous VISTA forum pages. First, you'll need to buy a 'new' version of XP; second, you will also need to find the appropriate drivers that will run w/ your LT's hardware - finally, please provide some comments on why your wife dislikes VISTA - maybe some suggestions can be made to ease the transition if you decide to give the OS another try? Good luck -

She has a Acer AMD Turion 64x2 with 2GB of RAm and a 160GB SATA HArddrive I have a copy of XP, and yes its a store copy I know about the driver problems and I'm prepared for that fun job. She hates everything about VISTA the interface he amount of space it take up, the problems it has with Freeware, the downloading problems the security proplem ,ie: needed permissions for everything that happens. I hate the networking problem with my XP. I've suggested trying to work out her issues, but she's wants its gone and XP back

Howdy:
I assume this copy has not been used before and is a retail and not OEM version (will say on the case)?
Also, what model of Acer laptop? What you gave is the CPU info (AMD, etc).

Sorry to be a bit dense here but does the OEM copy only license for one, i.e. the original machine?
If that is the case I've reinstalled my laptop OS a couple of times so what's to stop it installing on a seperate PC I own? apart from license issues that is?

OEM can only be installed on the system it was originally installed on. It is married to that system forever even if it ends up in a landfill somewhere.

OK Thanks. So what does mean for the software packages which are sold as "OEM Version" some by quite reputible companies. Are these blackmarket then?

No, it just means that what ever system you install that OEM cd on it has to stay with that system forever.
It also means that you have agreed to become the system builder for that system and are legally bound to provide any user-support warranty the OEM cd is used on.
