I acquired this pc from a friend. I can not get this thing to stand by mode. When I press the moon button that says standby it goes to stand by. But then I can't get it back. Any suggestions?

When ever acquiring a used computer you should reinstall Windows.
It's better to fdisk, format, then reinstall windows.
With "other peoples systems" you never know what's been happening
to that particular machine. It's best to clean it all out and make sure
you have a clean operating system, running a virus checker, before
using the computer. This saves loads of heartaches down the road
whether it be corruption or viruses.

I agree with the above. When getting a PC from someone else it is better to start over fresh. Did they include the Recovery CD's with it?

I have recovered as well as reformatted the computer trying to sole a internet disconnect problem mentioned in earlier posts. I am fearful of losing some files if I do it again. By the way, this internet disconnect problem has begun again. I just may buy a new modem and see if that works. It seems that I have tried everything else. The disconnect happens like clock work after surfing the web for about ten minutes. It is not random. Any ideas. Is there a program that can identify why I am haing these unwanted disconnects? Any help wpuld be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked your Phone lines. If there is any noise at all, it can interfere with the modem and diconnect you. Also, Have you tried upgrading the Modem Drivers?

I have a noise reducer on the phone line into the computer. The jack in the wall splits three ways to two phones and one line to the computer. How do I upgrade the modem drivers? Someone else suggested buying a US ROBOTICS V EVERTHING MODEM. I would like to avoid spending any more money on this box of wires.
Thanks!
