Try looking at the obvious like changes the brightness and contrast on the monitor itself. U said the light comes on so its probably all wired fine. If u happen to have another monitor plug the comp into it and this way u can narrow down the prob between the vid card and the monitor.
If u happen to have a startup disk (cant remember if ME's install disk is bootable, u can try) then use it to boot up. This loads all of the most basic components of that comp. If uve gotten this far when and if u get in go into device manager (right click my computer, properties, device manager) and check your video card (display adapter) right click on it and try and reinstall the drivers.
U can also play around with the graphics setting under the performance tab in the same place. Or check your refresh rates by right clicking anywhere on the desktop, properties, settings, advanced. This all providing u have gotten in.
Ohh yeah also when u first start do u hear any beeps aside from one short one.....anything else unusual happen?

well it should be a default cmos setting to boot to floppy first, but i know what ur sayin anywayz. If its not ur video card or monitor since u say youve switched both then im not sure....
I took an A+ class and my instructor told me about all sorts of problem hes seen where the fix was something so ridiculous nobody would even think to try it. One of them was a problem kinda like u were having, and he too switched video and monitors ect....and the problem turned out to be the KEYBOARD! yeah, somehow the keyboard was managing to take video away from the comp.....dont ask how cause i dont remember exactly.
I doubt this will do anything at all but u sound desperate and its a long shot. Providing u did switch video and monitors....
Keep trying to get in too....cause there still is a good chance its the drivers maybe.
Did u make any changes at all before this happend.

could be your motherbaord has developed a fault. If i'm right in thinking your graphics are built in to your motherboard.

try tapping your F8 key as you boot up see if that will get you into safe mode if it will reinstall your video drivers
also if you can get it up rclick on a empty space on your desk top
1 open propetys
2 screen saver
3 power
4 set all your power settings to never
ifyou cant get into safe mode ond you know how to get into your set up bios go there and disable your power management i dont know how to get into hp bios you may have to go to thier web site

Compaq on 2/15/2001 had this insight:
"In order to enter the Presario BIOS for setup, reboot the computer and watch the screen for the red Compaq logo. When you see the Compaq logo, and the cursor appears in the upper right corner of the screen, press the F10 key on the keyboard. Your various BIOS configurations will then be available to
If you dont see a logo start tapping your F10 as soon as you power up

Let me start over...... If I get on the computer and use it for 20-30 minutes and cut it off and someones else decides that they want to use it. They start the computer, you hear it booting, the monitor green light comes on flicks to yellow and you get the black screen. You walk away and come back about an hour later and it works fine. (Instead of shutting it down, right now I am just using restart) There is no error messages or anything. I checked all of the devices and drivers. Should I run startup log? Compaq doesn't have squat on this. I'm becomming obessed. I have spent countless hours surfin forums, tech sites, and self help pages.

One of the first things that I checked were the settings . Not set for hibernate.
In all my searching, a couple of things stuck in my mind. Something about the S3 Graphics Pro Savage driver and a conflict. I can't find the page were I read it. The other is something about the power saver feature. I have read so much stuff in the past week its all running together.
As far as compaq being a strange animal, there are lots of things i wish to call it but strange animal is the least! This thing has been a can of worms since it got here
I'm new to forums so i will check the rules. please forgive me for being impulsive but when i saw motorcycles post i jumped. Also would like to thank you for your input, because i ran out
