I have a refurbished HP 6835 running XP that I would love to be able move current system to new MSI - K9VGM barebones kit that I would like to add 1 gig of ram and 2.1 Ghz Athlon processor. I've been reading other forums involving similar situations and have seen differing opinions. Can I install old drive with current XP? If not is it possible to transfer HD contents including OS to a new drive or just (legally)reinstall from XP disk? mojokb

if xp pro came with your hp, you cannot move it to another computer. It is a violation of microsofts eula.

just do a search on your hp computer for eula and read it.

if you purchased it and it was not an upgrade or oem, then you can transfer it to another computer as long as you delete it from the old hp.

Does that mean it's okay to reinstall? I called Microsoft about a week ago and the rep asked if I planned to uninstall from my old system and I said no problem, I didn't need two systems with XP, just a new one and she seemed to think that was okay but was a bit vague.

It did say OEM does that mean I'm S.O.L. ? Or is there any other alternative?
