I use the Open Office Suite, version 2.3.1, rather than shell out hundreds of dollars for the M$ equivilents. The only complaint I have is that they open entirely too darn slow. Almost a minute is just not very acceptable. Is there some sort of thing I can do to get them to open a lot faster?

it opens almost immediately for me. It could be your system resources. Tell a little about your computer, cpu, ram, harddrive size and free space. Also what operating system.

It's a Dell Dimension, Windows XP Home, 2.2 GHz Celeron processor, 256 MB memory, and 80 gig harddrive with 55+ gigs free.
I realize that it could use more memory, but Open Office and Firefox are the only two programs I have this problem with. Since this computer is over 4 years old and I'll be in the market for a new one in the not too distant future, I don't really want to throw money at this one if I don't really have to.

you have a serious lack of ram. Most will recommend at least 512 megs of ram just for xp. open office requires 128 megs. If you have any antivirus, firewall or any other utilities running in the background they will need ram also. In edition if you do not have a video card are rely on onboard video, then its also taking ram.
You really do not have much choice with the opening speed.
