About a year ago I had someone reformat my harddrive. Since, time and money were short (he did some work on another computer) I told him I would reinstall windows myself. However, when i tried it told me, "The file: C:\I386\WINNTUPG\APMUPGRD.DLL cannot be recovered.
What do I do now? I tried doing this with and without a partition, same problem.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
The computer is a Hp pavilion a250n purchased in 9/03 and as I mentioned earlier it's been sitting for about a year. It was acting weird which is why I had someone look at it. My sons were the primary users and did a lot of gaming on it.
Thanks, Jean

Is this a message you get when running the restore CD?
Or
Is this a message while running a Windows XP installation cd?
or
Is this a message you get after you finish your installation of windows?
I guess I'm trying to say...We need some more details of how you got to this point.

When i first turn the computer on I get "NTLDR is missing" Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. It goes to hp pc system recovery. I select the recovery option it goes to Hard disk Preparation then starts copying the files.
Once there at 2% it gives me the cannot recover c\I386\WINNTUPG\APMUPGRD.DLL message.
I had the computer retry and made it as far as 8%, which is where it remained for about 45 min. then I shutdown the computer. I guess this was a hugh mistake because now when it asks me to insert disc one and I do, it says, "This is not the requested CD/DVD. Please insert hp System Recovery CD/DVD #1 now.
When all of this began we were having trouble with the DVD drive it wasn't opening, so we installed a Creative CD-RW 12-10-32x that we had just so we had something in the driver. So, I guess what I'm saying is this may be part of the problem.
Perhaps I need new harware at this point?

It's sounds like you may be suffering hard drive failure. That would explain why it can't find NTLDR and is also having recovery problems.

Thanks, Billy
I already started looking into replacing the harddrive. I'm not a techie person, so I'm looking to Hp for a replacement HD. I can get the same HD from them that came in the computer. I figure this might be the easiest way to go. And I see that TigerDirect has a Hp DVD+R+RW for $39.99 that seems like it should be adequate for my needs. Since this is a second computer and I'm not so familiar with all the different brands and features, I'm just going to play it safe.
Again, thanks for your help.
