Hi, everyone, I got a problem with my external hard drive, which has all my backed up files, not being recognized on my ME desktop. It used to work fine until I had to reformat the hard drive on the computer. When I brought everything back up I plugged the external usb drive back in but it doesn't show up in "my computer" but it does seem to be recognized by the "safely remove hardware" window. I feel this is a problem with drivers but I'm not sure which. I can plug this external drive in two other laptops and see it, one is running XP and the other Vista. Any suggestions as what I have to do to get this drive recognized in ME? Thanks for any help.

Since Windows ME is an older OS, do you remember having to install 'drivers' for the external drive when first hooked to the computer or was the drive 'recognized' on just being plugged in? Since the brand/model of the external drive was not mentioned, I would first check the manufacturer's web site to see if there is information on this drive operating w/ Windows Me? Good luck -

Thanks for the suggestion. The drive, a WD2500JB, did not come with any drivers and worked fine from the start. I just put it into an external usb enclosure and it functioned correctly connected to my Windows ME desktop.

Problem solved!!!

Went to Device Manager, then right clicked on the 2.0 usb storage device that it is, and then clicked on removable and then went to reserve drive letter and selected one. Then ok and rebooted. It's all there and now shared in my network.

GREAT! Congrats - that was goin' to be my next suggestion, i.e. to check 'Device Manager' if you external drive had connected orginally - glad that you were able to solve the problem!
