can't log on to msn messinger service

I completed downloading msn messinger service and it excepts my password and user name but when I click O.K. to log on a window comes up which says -cannot continue till the newer version is installed would you like to continue? If I click yes it goes through the installing process then an error box comes on telling me to get a newer version of windows.(I have Windows ME). If I click no then i get no further with the log on process Does this mean I cannot use msn messenger service with windows ME? Why would it install everything, acccept my user name and password, then not let me log on? Is there an older version that I could use? One that I can use my microphone and C-it camera to communicate with other members? Thank you
