Is upgrading from W98 first edition to ME not a good idea?

Remember reading somewhere that ME upgrade causes lots of problems, and that it is better to do a clean ME install.

Any thoughts?

Personally, I would just stay with 98. If you do go to ME, then a clean install is highly recommended.

I would second the recommendation to do a clean install. But, before you go through all that...ensure that your hardware is enough for WinME.

If you have Win98 (non-SE) on that machine, I'm guessing it is relatively old and the hardware might not meet up with the suggested performance minimums. I ran into an issue with a 166MHz 80MB ram box, it really sucked while running ME, that I had to take it back to 98SE.

I agree with the above statements. You really need alot of ram to run ME. It is hard on your system at best. You really wont get any good advantages of going to Win/ME at all. Maybe an upgrade to 98se would help you though.

I'm running 98se, 2000 Pro, and XP Pro and really like all three. Have worked with Win/ME alot on my Mom's PC and hate that OS with a passion....

Thanks for the replies.

The owners of the PC (Dell Dimension XPS R450 w/384MB RAM) want to install Me. Recommended not upgrading from W98FE to WMe, as per suggestions and comments. However, if Me is installed, it will be a full clean install.

Right now what we are looking at is finding an Me driver for the following:

STB nVidia TNT 16MB 3D AGP video card
TBS Montego II A3D PCI Sound Card
US Robotics 56K Voice Modem

The Dell site has no WMe support for this PC.

Concerned about whether a BIOS update is needed, although the 17GB Maxtor HDD will remain. Would there be any other reasons to consider a BIOS update, other than HDD limitations?

The board on this PC is an Intel SE440BX AA696089-407 with a 100MHz bus clock. The BIOS: 4S4EB0X1.10A.0019.P09 is dated 08/14/98

Appreciate any suggestions or comments

Sorry to jump into this topic, but I've ran 98SE & XP - Home & Pro & have reverted back to Windows ME, I've found it very stable (After tweaking, but then that is the same for all Windows OS).
Not a single BSOD, more stable that 98SE & ran apps & games faster than XP amongst other things, but to each his own. :)

I just wanted to give out an alternative opinion of Windows ME that's all.

Just because "some" have problems with a specific OS doesn't mean all will. :)
