View Full Version : Defrag problems-Locking Up

Hi all. Did a defrag after a diskscan (followed tutorials on clearing everything, screensaver, starting in Dos for scandisk, etc.)
The defrag was working well until it got to 44%. Then it locked. I've hit the pause, then resume, stop and restart, and also restarted the defrag from scratch numerous times. No luck.
Does anyone have any solution.
Thanks.

Hi rgsmile202
Here is a link that might help. ;)

One other thing I would suggest doing is running a virus check.

Had run a virus check with Norton's. Had also unchecked all but the load power profile(2), system tray and scan registry.
I usually do this thru systems information/tools/system config utility/ tools/startup.
Does this achieve the same results??

Tweaker, I had followed those instructions.

try running the defrag in safe mode and NOT using the details option.

If running in safe mode does not do it, then I would back everything up. Your HD might be going.

Abre-I'll try that. Not sure what the details option is, but I suppose it's in there.
Thanks

Thanks everyone. It took awhile, but finally finished. Seem to hang in the 40's, but finally moved on.
Could it be that I could have a hard drive problem? I've never seen anything during my system checks that would lead me to think so.
Please comment.
Thanks.

Abre, what did you mean about the 'details option'? I never saw that.

Curious did it complete in normal mode or safe mode?
The details is essentially a button on the status meter that allows you to see a graphical representation of the blocks being moved. This option will sometimes hang the system and can also cause the operation to take 20-40% longer depending on HD size.

Abre. Safe Mode. I must have missed something, because I had the details selected and never noticed any choices.
Thanks.
