Ill post more info later, but i was wondering if there was any known issues with vista refusing to shut down properly when you click on shut down?

it also wont boot unless the disk is in the disk drive, but then the disk drive wont recognise any other disks?

Could be a fault Disk Drive, but that doesn't explain why it will boot if a disk is in the drive?

Please post more info, is there any program that you are running that is big and needs ending via Task manager?

If it does type Ctrl + Shift + Esc then click the processes tab then click memory usage to send the item with the biggest usage to the top. If you know what it is end it.

If you don't know how to do that, hold down the power button to forcefully shut down the computer.

See if that makes a difference?

Also boot into safe mode and see if that does anything (If you can).

my friend said that the disk drive only works when the vista disk is in, but why would it be a disk drive fault if it worked for that?

I'm not understanding your question clearly. You are having problems when you shut down your Vista PC, and it won't boot back up unless the Vista installation DVD is in the disk drive?
