I know Vista is known for booting slow and I've unchecked all the things I can in msconfig. Are there any more things that can be tweaked to make it boot faster?

On my VISTA laptop, I usually just put the computer in 'sleep mode' & shut the top - yes, much is kept in RAM which requires a little continuous power, but does 'come up' much quicker - usually just do a 'shut-down & restart' if updates are done or if I'm goin' out of town for a while. Will be quite interested in other comments, though - this is a constant complaint w/ VISTA that seems not easily solved - :hmm:

yeah i shut mine and let it sleep too... it's a whole lot faster, even though i'd really prefer the hibernate feature

So if I understand your answers, you are NOT turning your computer off....correct? If that is true, that option won't work for me. I can't leave my computer out all the time and if it is not plugged in the battery would die wouldn't it? Because I have such a short battery life, I always plug my laptop in when I use it.

Correct about not 'shutting down' - as stated, the 'sleep' mode does take a small drain off the battery if you machine is not on AC power; not sure 'how much' battery life you have nor 'how long' the sleep mode lasts before the machine would shut down on its own?
For me, I have my power adapter plugged into the laptop when in sleep mode, so not an issue; this is a home computer used in the den connected to the net wirelessly; thus, not a security issue.

In Vista, you have a this boot time out option. You can access the boot menu by loading your MSCONFIG. During the boot up your computer issues a time out to find new hardware and software. You can short this time to boost your startup speed.
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type msconfig
4. In the system configuration utility, click either BOOT tab.
5.In the boot menu, change the default setting for Time Out from 30 to 5 seconds.
Hope this helps!
