Before anyone says virus, it's not. That part has been proven. The issue I'm trying to solve is the random disappearance of the IE icon under 2K and IE 6. It's happened to me on several occasions. On my laptop, desktop, work system, in a VMWare sessions on several occasions. None of the VMWare sessions ever had email use.

At any given time after installing IE6, the icon on the desktop will dissapear. I can recreate a new one with a shortcut, but it's not the same. I no longer have the ability to right click and access the Internet Options.

I did a bit of serching on Microsoft KB but found nothing about it. Am I the only one who seems to have this problem or is someone else getting it to? Can anyone point me to a fix?

Check the registry on your machine for a key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\TerminalServer

The Windows installer with Office 2000 and other new MS apps add this key to keep certain things from running on Terminal Servers. Naldesk.exe checks for this key when loading and thinks the machine is a Terminal Server and it removes the icon from the desktop. Just delete the Terminal Sever key (unless this is a terminal server) and restore this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ Desktop\NameSpace\ {CF8EF420-3DF3-11d0-AC35-00C04FD9338A} with a value of the name you've given your NAL icon. Refresh your desktop and the icon reappears.

OR

Have ya tried deleting shelliconcache file, reboot and let it rebuild?

Maybe try this:

Regedit to add a "Max Cached Icons" (without quotation marks) string value with a value data of 2048 (without quotation marks) to the following registry key and then restart the computer.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer

Well, after my install of 2K on the lappy took a nose dive, I watched very carefully after reinstalling the os. All throughout the various updates and program installs, the changing of settings and so forth, it finally disappeared. Using the above two methods dosen't work for me. I got an unnamed folder on my desktop using your second method murf and never got anything from the first and last. I tried the link to jsi but it came up a no go. The value wasn't what they specified it would be but I tried to change it to 22 and see what happens. I lost the icon while Office XP was installing and I was unchecking the "Enable Automatic Image Resizing" under the Advanced tab in Internet Options. If seemed to happn right as I clicked Apply in the Itnernet Options.

poof. Gone for good.

Strange must be linked to Office XP, maybe Tweakui may help:
