I originally posted this in the gaming forum but I'm thinking this may be the proper place for it as I do believe my problem is vista based. My apologies but maybe a mod could lock or delete the other thread please.
I'm at my wits end on what to do here. I've got what I understand to be a common problem. This nvlddmkm driver error. I've researched around quite a bit and found numerous forums with lengthy threads where people have been plagued with this issue. I have yet to find a workable solution for my system.
I have had this PC for months now haven't been able to play anything.
I was going to try getting rid of Vista for XP but all I have is an XP update disk and can't get it to install. I'm not about to spend 200 bucks on a full copy of XP.
I installed ntune because of someone's post I read where it helped solve the problem. But people have mentioned underclocking ram or tweaking the voltages and I'm really in over my head with that because I've never done it before.
The nVidia website suggests that the problem has been resolved. That as long as you have the latest drivers and vista sp1 everything should work fine. I've done all that. Still have the problem.
My PC came with a 256mb shared memory nvidia graphics chip so I installed a Geforce 5500 fx (256mb). I thought about removing it altogether if it might solve my problem but I'm not sure if the shared memory can handle a game that recommends 128mb of video memory.
At this point I don't care about the graphics quality if I can get my games to at least run without crashing.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

ECS MCP61PM-HM mobo
AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core 4200+
2 gigs ram (2x 1 gig sticks)
nVidia Geforce 5500 FX (256mb)

Hi unforgiven1977. Search seems to be disabled unless you are a member on the nVidia forum but I found this (http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t38941.html) topic that suggests that this may be a hardware related related issue. It is much more likely that you will get help for this issue in the Gaming Forum than here so I have closed this topic to avoid duplication of effort.
