Hiya guys,

So I'd like to consider myself pretty tech savvy, but i have one weak spot...networking bah! Well, i have a netgear n router connected to a cable modem using mac address filtering and a "back up" linksys router connected to a different cable modem with no restrictions.

A friend just dropped off his laptop for me to try to fix, he says that no matter what type of internet connection he is using (wired, wireless, cellular, dial up), he can not browse the web. Right now i have the laptop connected to my back up router and it says the connection is excellent but when i open ie to try to browse the web i get an error saying "internet explorer cud not open the search page.

I check the internet options to make certain that the lan settings have "automatically detect settings" option enabled...it is
I checked the wireless network connection properties to make sure that tcp/ip is checked as well as "obtain an ip address automatically" they are both checked.

if there is anything that im missing please let me know guys and gals!

cheers!

If you run ipconfig/all what do you get for output?
Is it also set to get its DNS server from DHCP?
What version of windows is it running?
What firewall or security software is installed?

from ipconfig all i get
physical address - which displays the pc mac address

dhcp and autoconfiguration are both enabled
ip address 192.168.1.1
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway, dhcp server, and dns servers - 192.168.1.1

its a tablet pc running windows xp tablet version...professional i think

no firewall running or installed

something is wrong. Are you sure it said DHCP and autoconfiguration enabled for that connection? Your IP address and your default gateway shouldn't be the same. You may also want to make sure that the linksys's dhcp isn't misconfigured and handing out 192.168.1.1.

yes im positive that it says dhcp and autoconfiguration is enabled for the connection, my router is operating fine as i have 4 other computers connected to it..and any one else i give access to can browse the web just fine.

i think it has to be some settings on the laptop...hell i say wipe it clean and reinstall xp lol

While I wouldn't be able to tell you why a computer with DHCP enabled would be acting as it is, it seems as though that unless you've typed your IP address wrong that the computer is using an unusable IP address. You might want to try setting the TCP/IP settings yourself setting up all of the information the same except manually choosing the IP as something like 192.168.1.110.

Hi, im a newbie networking student so i would encourage people to correct me here if im wrong.

I believe, that if your going to manually assign a Ip address then you have to manually configure the router too for that port.

Do you have console or telnet access to the router?
