Please help- formatted and reinstalled Win98 and having monitor/sound problems...
Hi.
Since reinstalling windows 98, I can't get the monitor to display past 16 colors, even though my previous settings had 356 and tru color available. When I do a search for best possible driver from the Windows CD ROM it doesn't change anything. My monitor is a GEM DD 556 and according to my computer, what's on DISPLAY ADAPTERS is 'STANDARD PCI GRAPHICS ADAPTOR (VGA). I don't have the drivers for the monitor- the computer came already built...and this awful looking 16 bits is giving me a headache! Also... I'm not getting any sound out of the speakers anymore. They're on and plugged into the right socket but CDs won't play nor are there any standard windows sounds. Any tips or suggestions to help me solve these problems would be incredibly appreciated! Thanks and nice to meet you all. Darren

Thanks Cody.
I don't have the driver discs, unfortunately. I downloaded AIDA though. What an amazing program. It gave me all the info on my monitor and I downloaded the appropriate .INF and .ICM files... I selected them in the DEVICE MANAGER for Monitors INF and changed the default to the appropriate ICM file, but nothing happened. I'm still getting the same 16 colors....Does this have something to do with the adapter or display adapter or something? |

Hey Darren.
Correct, it is the DISPLAY Adapter (Or Video adapter) that you need drivers for. Windows doesn't know what it is so has loaded default "standard VGA" which is only capable of 16 colours but at least gets you to a desktop. In AIDA, there are 2 video categories under "Display" Windows Video will show "standard VGA" Look under PCI/AGP Video and it will show the result of the hardware probe of your video adapter. You then need to find drivers for that reported card/chipset.

Thanks, Smurfy.
Under PCI/AGP it shows two items, one with the image of an X, the other with the image of a monitor. Both have next to them SiS 86C306 Any idea where I'd find these drivers online and how to install them? |

I was able to get the monitor back to normal, by doing a driver search file by file on the GAMUT driver CDROM I have. I found a setup file and voila! the monitor is fine...
Unfortunately the sound still isn't working..I'll monitor the other sound problem thread as they seem similar... Thanks for the help, all. D |
