Hi leachim. Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) from here to your Desktop. Close all open applications and windows, doubleclick on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, a text file will open. Copy and paste the contents of this log (Main.txt) in your next reply. Also post the contents of Extra.txt (it should be minimised on your taskbar but if not, it can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder). You may find that the maximum characters allowed is exceeded when you post. If so, halve the logs and make several posts.

Hi
Thanks for that I copied dss to a stick and put it in the laptop - eventually managed to highlight it - but it won't run - the round blue vista circle just hovers over it annoyingly It won't start in safe mode either |

Hi
Couldn't get dss to run - I was lucky to get HJT to run, so I attach it below Sometimes is will open a program, then it freezes - or may take an hour to do something - it has really done my head in the last few days. ![]() It will take 4 or 5 attempts to start vista from the ON button - just wondered if there is something wrong with the disk Anyway - hope to hear from someone... One more thing - HJT said that it was "denied access to Hosts file" so that any fixes that are to be made may not take effect I am logged on as an administrator ========= Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 14:46:23, on 12/04/2008 Platform: Windows Vista (WinNT 6.00.1904) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16643) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\Windows\system32\Dwm.exe C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE C:\Windows\system32\taskeng.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\Windows\RtHDVCpl.exe C:\Acer\Empowering Technology\eDataSecurity\eDSLoader.exe C:\Program Files\Acer\Acer Arcade\PCMService.exe C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\SDTrayApp.exe C:\Users\pamela\AppData\Local\Temp\RtkBtMnt.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint2K\Apoint.exe C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7\avgcc.exe C:\Windows\System32\igfxtray.exe C:\Windows\System32\hkcmd.exe C:\Windows\System32\igfxpers.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe C:\Windows\system32\igfxsrvc.exe C:\Acer\Empowering Technology\ENET\ENMTRAY.EXE C:\Acer\Empowering Technology\EPOWER\EPOWER_DMC.EXE C:\Acer\Empowering Technology\ACER.EMPOWERING.FRAMEWORK.SUPERVISOR.EX E C:\Acer\Empowering Technology\eRecovery\ERAGENT.EXE C:\Program Files\Apoint2K\Apntex.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.google.co.uk/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://en.uk.acer.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896 R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = O1 - Hosts: ::1 localhost O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: Spybot-S&D IE Protection - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll O3 - Toolbar: Acer eDataSecurity Management - {5CBE3B7C-1E47-477e-A7DD-396DB0476E29} - C:\Windows\system32\eDStoolbar.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ALaunch] C:\Acer\ALaunch\AlaunchClient.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RtHDVCpl] RtHDVCpl.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eDataSecurity Loader] C:\Acer\Empowering Technology\eDataSecurity\eDSloader.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCMService] "C:\Program Files\Acer\Acer Arcade\PCMService.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LManager] C:\PROGRA~1\LAUNCH~1\LManager.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Apoint] C:\Program Files\Apoint2K\Apoint.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SetPanel] C:\Acer\APanel\APanel.cmd O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgcc.exe /STARTUP O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Easy-PrintToolBox] C:\Program Files\Canon\Easy-PrintToolBox\BJPSMAIN.EXE /logon O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SDTray] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\SDTrayApp.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\Windows\system32\igfxtray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\Windows\system32\hkcmd.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Persistence] C:\Windows\system32\igfxpers.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] "C:\Windows\system32\msconfig.exe" /auto O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sidebar] C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe /autoRun O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [AVG7_Run] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe /RUNONCE (User 'SYSTEM') O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [AVG7_Run] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe /RUNONCE (User 'Default user') O4 - Global Startup: Empowering Technology Launcher.lnk = ? SpywareBot is a rogue program so it would be a good idea to uninstall it from Programs and Features in Control Panel and reboot.
I cant see any other problems in that log but Hijack This is really only a convenient registry interface so it doesnt mean a lot. The fact that you cant boot into Safe Mode or run msconfig sounds like a possible infection but I cant be sure. What happens when you try to run msconfig? Can you run regedit and task manager? See if you can run ComboFix. You can download the latest version of Combofix.exe from here and save it to your C folder (C:\ComboFix.exe). Doubleclick on combofix.exe and and the scan will start. When the scan completes, a text window with your log will open. Please copy and paste that log back here. A caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. NB Please disable your antivirus program as it may interfere with ComboFix's routines. Copy this log in your next reply together with a new Hijack This log (you can download Hijack This from here if you dont have it already).

I managed to open TM and CPU is 100%
But the highest value was 5 - so I couldn't see what process was sucking it all up. It would not let me see "Show processes from all users" though. Is it possible that even though I am logged on as an administrator, someone hidden is logged on soaking up the cpu - just curious because HJT says it cannot alter the host file |

Hi leachim. With UAC enabled, the Administrator account enabled doesnt exist in the form that was present in Windows versions prior to Vista. Now all users have standard user accounts which denote the level of access they have and are logged in as standard users by default. This means that Admins are logged in with administrative privileges disabled. To gain access to Administrative options, the user must provide the necessary credentials via Admin Approval Mode. See User Account Control here.
If you run Hijack This as dammit suggested, you will not get that message.

Thanks for the reply - the link was a bit over my head
Anyway - as a clue, CPU is 100% all the time, but no processes show much more that single figures It struggles to open control panel I really need an external source to repair windows files, like a vista cd Any thoughts, as I am struggling to get it to do anything (plus it won't boot into safe mode) Thanks |

This is a new Laptop and should be under warranty. You should contact Acer and talk to them about this. I am faily sure that Acer use eRecovery software.
