New to networking

I have just purchased 2 new desktop computers I would like to network them.They both have onboard Network Interface Cards.
Can I connect them with a ( cat5 ) crossover cable? what else would I need to do?
I have look at a few networking websites and I am getting confused I would appreciate any help I coul get thank you:dizzy:

what are you plans with them?

you can use a crossover cable but you have to setup an ip address for both computer within the same range and just ping each other to make sure they can communicate..then you can share files in between.

If you want both to have interent then i would recommend you getting a router which has a built in firewall in additional to your desktop firewall (windows) and its easy as pie if you follow the instructions in the manual.
