How do I set up a shared file between 2 computers?

How do I set up a shared file between 2 computers on a wireless network?

1 computer is a desk top on windows xp and the other computer is a laptop with windows vista.

I tried to follow the computer's "how to" guide but it's not working.

Any pointers?

hi wendywoo, the first thing to do is make sure both pc's are on the same workgroup.
By default, XP and Vista have differnet names (mshome on one, workgroup on the other). Choose one, and apply to both pc's. Are you ok with doing that?

this is merely the starter for a rather long chain of posts until we get you sorted.

Once you have them in the same workgroup give each pc a name I have mine called
left and right...Click start and then click my computer then click on your C drive you should be at the root of your c drive..right click and select new folder and give it a name...then right click the folder and select sharing and security and tick the box that says share this folder on the network...next at the top select tools and select map network drive choose any drive letter you want..now on my pc the shared folder is on the pc named right and is called share4us so in the box below i put \\right\share4us
thats it now if you go to my computer you should have a mapped network drive...now go to your other pc click start and where it says my computer right click it and select map network drive type in the same \\right\share4us now the two pcs can share this folder....only thing you need to do different is were I have put \\right\share4us yours would be the name you have given it instead of right and the name of the folder you are sharing instead of share4us..pretty easy just sounds complicated..hope this helps you

The explanation to Wendy was crystal clear, but didn't mention one disturbing item which has occurred on one of my computers, which are networked. This paricular computer is running Win98SE (I know, I know, but my wife likes that OS). When I attempt to access another computer (same group name), the system demands a network password. I know I never installed a PW, but the system asks for one anyhow. I have no trouble accessing the folders on my wife's computer from others on the network, but can't do the reverse. I've checked the connections, and have no trouble pinging from any to all.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?
Tom

Are there multiple users on the Windows 98 machine? If not, just edit your network settings to add Client For Microsoft Networks, and remove Windows Logon. You might have to delete the PWL files in yoru C:\WINDOWS directory if you still have issues. You may get the box to pop up for a password on either startup or network access, but you should be able to just click OK and pass it, thus eliminating the password.

That sounded great. Unfortunately, it didn't work!. When I boot up, the Network box comes on the screen with the User name. Clicking OK )no password) works fine. However, when I attempt to access the other computer, even after following your suggestions, I am still asked for a password. Eliminating the PWL files didn't help.

Sometimes I wish I understood all I know about these things.
