Hello,
My first post here so be gentle
Here is my issue:
I have a brand new gaming rig (See specs below) and when I install my OEM vista 32bit home extreme edition the result initially are good, no real issues. I do the normal MB drivers, Video card drivers, Audio, DVD drive and everything is OK. I add my Bit Defender software and update it, still ok.
It is when I do the windows updates that the system goes bad and I have to start all over again. What happens is when it is done downloading the updates it says to reboot and I do and it says configuring updates for like 40 minutes to an hour and then shutting down and it never does. I let it try and shut down for 8 hours last night and nothing. I hold the power button until it shuts off and when I reboot the little scrolling line thingy runs across the bottom but it does not boot up. Any help is appreciated

Nick

System:
790i (EVGA) Bios P03, the latest
9800gx2(EVGA) drivers 174.74
Q9450 proc
OCZ DDR3 1600 ram
WD 500gb drive
Lite on DVD burner
Fatal1ty pro audio card
Corsair 550W PSU
CPU is H2o cooled so no temp issues
Nothing is over clocked at this time

Hi Nick. Have a look at this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;949358) MS article. Does it sound like your problem? If so, try the fixes and the below workaround and let us know if this helped.

To avoid this problem, obtain and install update 937287 from the Microsoft Download Center separately from all other updates on Windows Update site. Install the update that applies to your version of Windows Vista to enable future updates to be installed successfully.

Wow, you guys are good

When I got home I put in my Vista disc to do the usual but with nothing to loose I looked around and hit the repair and it worked. I thought cool so I went in for more updates and it seemed to be going well so I downloaded Vista and did the install but it hung at the shutdown screen. I rebooted and used safemode and and it fixed itself again. I did uninstall the Creative media source as it kept coming up when I tried to restart plus I don't need it. I checked the article you sent and I did have the updates mentioned 937287, in fact it was downloaded 2 days ago when I first tried, weird.
Looks like it is working but I will monitor it of course. Now I get to install Crysis and try some gaming for the first time in months.
I will let you know how it goes and thanks again.

Nick
