I can't change my display settings.

I have a pentII and bought a new pc100 256 card. I now have 512
I was checking out the display settings, there were extra options on it, ATI something or other.I was inpressed with the improved performance so I changed the screensize to 1024X768 the screen went blank and the monitor started flashing like when it's on standy by.
I restarted and it was still like that. I went to safe mode and tried to change it. it will not change. Is this a virus? I can hardly see anything. It is saying 16 bit and I thought it was better than that. It looked great yesterday.
Please somebody have some insite here I am running virus scan but this is terrible. I have changed it like 10 times now and still nothing....
Did I fry the video card or something?

Please help..
Kenny

Welcome to CTH

No not a virus, just the display settings are wrong. You cannot change in Safe Mode, as when you boot in Safe Mode it loads a generic driver.

If you can see in SAFE MODE then do this.

Right click on "My Computer" then go to "Properties", now go to "Device Manager" TAB.

Find the entry that says "Display Adapters", hit the + sign to expand. Now the entry you see, right click to highlite and uninstall. Once that is done reboot normally and Windows should find and reinstall the Video driver, and you should beback to normal.

OMG!!!!

Thank you So Very Very much!
A friend I met Online sent this old beast to me, I just found some Ram for it and wanted to see what I could do with it....I have 4 slots and was also wondering if I can fill them all up with 256 cards.. It a 532 or something close to that possessor on an old home built machine. I hear I might need to move a jumper or something in order to add that much ram but I wonder if the unit can even take advantage of that much... I don't remember anybody even having 512 back when these were out.
I am a popular member of Infield Parking a Forum for NASCAR fans I will promote your site with a link on my page. Thank you again.

I take it that fixed it??? Thanks.

As for the memory, you first have to find out if the memory you have is compatible or even fit. One way to find out is to download and run this free program EVEREST. Once you run it, it will tell you just about everything you need to know about that old goose.

If you post what type of memory it has identified we can help to ensure what you have will fit or work. If this is a name brand computer i.e., dell, compaq ect., post the brand and model number and we can tell from that information.

Your motherboard supports
Four 168-pin SDRAM DIMM sockets support up to 1GB
PC100 DIMM support
Which means you can put a 256MB stick of memory in each slot 4x256 =1GB

You currently have 1 stick 256MB in Slot 1 and 1 stick 256MB in Slot 2

So you can add 1 stick 256MB in slot 3 and 1 Stick 256MB in slot 4

You do not have to move any jumpers, just stick the memory in. You cannot put a 512MB stick in one slot only 256MB or smaller.

I have 7 mbps Cable modem If your on Cable, the modem will only download run at the speed the server is running. If your running at 7mbps, there has to be a configuration problem, as most cable modems run at least 10mbps. Now this also depends on the Network card in the computer. It could be slkowing you down.

You have a Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter, there is no way it should be running at 7mbps, that card is intended, just like its name to run up to 100mbps.

What make and model is the modem????

LOL!
That is AWESOME! 1 gig. I will order them right away, when I got it there was only one, I called Office Depot.....$89.99, Ordered on E-bay for $13 NEW! People have known everything and given me a plethora of bad Information. just seems the page loads are slow for 7mbps, and I'm thinking the computer just can't Process it any faster, although the 2ed card has done wonders. looks to me like I could have bought the 1.5 mbps service and seen the same result. They are Stingy here I guess, 10mbps is 79.99 a month..NO thanks, I remember having a 512 cable modem back in the day and this seems about like that. I have a fan on my graphics card and it seems to do well, I was wondering if it would do any good to upgrade that as well. I am hell bent on making this old machine work and do everything any other computer can do for a low cost!
You have given me more useful information in 3 posts than I have gotten in 3 weeks.

Go HERE

You will need to setup a ID and password (Its free).

Once you have done that go to the Download section.

You are looking for a FIRMWARE upgrade for you modem. It should be:

TS050237C_112907_MODEL_4_5_6
Firmware Revision: 5.2.37C

May have to search around their site to find it. Download it, they should tell you how to do it.

Lets see if that helps your speed.

Hi,
1 gig is overkill for Millenium.

512Mb is perfect.
As you found out, 168 pin SDRAM is sometimes sold a premium prices.
However, those sticks of RAM are not going to be worth a lot for people upgrading pentium 4 with socket 478 and sdram, because they usually want PC133, and bigger.
(not 66 and not 100)

I see you pentium III-533 uses PC66, and PC100 should be no problem.
The CPU was up to snuff long ago, but current broadband browsing will put some serious demands on that old CPU.

Don't spend too much good money on it.

I have been reading all day.
I don't think I'm going to figure this out.
After walking through everything I know how to do, the only thing left I can think it could be is the winsock thing. but I know nothing about that and my Internet provider refuses to walk me through it.
Although sounds like he know he says he is not allowed to tell me over the phone cause it is too dangerous.
I am wondering seriously if I need to find an upgrade disk to go from me to xp or if installing linux would get me back online.
I just want it to go online and play music and video.
that's all maybe write letters and print...I am bummed

Are you saying you cannot get online? Your getting a winsock error?

If your getting an error what is the error?

I can type in ip ady and get google but still can not redirect. Do you mean if you type in the IP in the address bar of your browser it goes there? But no where else?

Good place to start.

Do you mean if you type in the IP in the address bar of your browser it goes there? But no where else?.....Yes I can not click on any links or anything....
NO, NO error messages at all, It crashed while I was online, froze up, I waited a while and then just turned it off and started it back up. WHen I restarted I had no internet. I called my provider, I was able to ping him, but when I would ping www.google.com nothing,in the command prompt. now If i put http:// series of #s in my browser I can get a direct connect to google but I can not redirect anywhere.
I have no idea what happened. I uninstalled my Panda antivirus and firewall just in case it had freaked out and blocked everything but to no avail.
I have NO firewall on, NO antivirus, nothing seems to be wrong, and just did a scan of everything on Friday early........

OK, lets first go to the obvious, corrupted Internet Explorer. So lets try a repair of that. If you are using Internet Explorer 6 then do this:
  1. Click on Start, then click on Settings, and then click on Control Panel.
  2. Once the control panel window is open double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. You will now see a screen that shows a listing of all installed programs on your computer. Scroll down till you see Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools.
  4. Double-click this entry and a screen will appear asking what you would like to do.
  5. Select the option to Repair Internet Explorer and press the OK button.
  6. Then press the Yes key to begin the process.
  7. When it is completed reboot your comput
If you are runnning Internet Explorer 5.5 or earlier it should be the same as above.
