hello

have one internet connection to house (2mb from VM) this goes to a wireless router so all occupants can get the net in their rooms should they wish.

It has admin password and security password on it and there are 10 gizmo gadgets that access it

PROBLEM....
there are people who have started to download heavily and the rest of the people get no speed... google page takes up to 3 mins to load at times!

Q1. can someone make there own computer have first call to the band width (from the secrets of there room) and effectivly 'make others chase the crumbs left'.

Q2. can someone play with ports to stop another resident from accessing their emails through the router.

Q3. is this the begining of war due to competing for bandwidth that is not enough to go around?

any thoughts experiences etc would be appreciated
cheers Inq

Q1. can someone make there own computer have first call to the band width (from the secrets of there room) and effectivly 'make others chase the crumbs left'.Maybe, it depends on the router

Q2. can someone play with ports to stop another resident from accessing their emails through the router. yes, but that sounds like it could easily start a war.

Q3. is this the begining of war due to competing for bandwidth that is not enough to go around? possibly. There are several resources you are all competing for. First there is the wireless bandwidth, then there is the download bandwidth from the ISP and there is the upload bandwidth.

You said there are some heavy downloaders, so whoever has the ISP account in there should be concerned about what is being download because they are responsible for it, even if someone else in the house actually does it.

If folks there are playing with torrents and allow upload, they could be affecting everyones download speed too. All, network traffic puts load on the router which may slow things down. Also, since most ISPs provide a slow uplink, since requests (http and others) also go over the uplink, all internet activities even surfing can be affect.

IMHO. Besides causing issues with sharing the connections, heavy downloaders are looking for trouble one way or another.

each one of your points has an eye opening merit to it... thanks.

sharing sounds such an economical option.... and prob would be if it wernt for parisites, greedy bods and me-mes etc.

cheers again
