exporer error message can't reboot!

Right after I downloaded free version of AVG virus software detector I
received the following message and I cannot reboot my computer! "Error
loading EXPLORER.EXE. You must reinstall Windows." I don't have my old
start up disk or backup disk fro Windows ME & cannot get to my very
important files on my computer. Any suggestions?? Shuts down immediately.
Can I upload a startup disk that would t least allow me to reboot again.:confused:

Reboot and after the first screen comes up (before the Windows Logo) start tapping the F8 key. A menu will come up, select "SAFE MODE" if it boots up then uninstall AVG.
